I strongly support the Second Amendment and the rights of law-abiding New Mexicans to own firearms. These rights are part of our Constitution and part of our way of life. They should be protected with care and respect, not weakened by policies that treat responsible gun owners as the problem. Most New Mexicans who own firearms do so safely, legally, and with a strong sense of responsibility.

Public safety works best when law enforcement is focused on the people who actually threaten it. My approach starts with enforcing the laws already on the books against prohibited possessors, repeat offenders, and individuals who have already shown criminal or violent behavior. When resources are stretched thin, they should be directed where they can do the most good. Targeted enforcement keeps communities safer without placing new burdens on citizens who follow the law.

Red flag laws and extreme risk firearm protection orders deserve careful handling. The goal of preventing harm is understandable, but any process that allows the temporary loss of a constitutional right must include strong court oversight and clear legal standards. Evidence should matter, hearings should be fair, and decisions should be reviewed by a judge. Rights should never be taken away based on assumptions, rushed claims, or weak proof.

Mental health must be addressed with accuracy and fairness. Many people live full, stable lives while managing conditions like anxiety, ADHD, or depression. These individuals should not be treated as automatic risks. The focus should stay on true crisis situations where there is clear, immediate danger, not on broad labels that discourage people from seeking help or speaking honestly with doctors.

I also believe in promoting responsible gun ownership through voluntary and practical steps. Education, training, and safe storage save lives. Encouraging the use of firearm safes helps prevent accidents, theft, and illegal trafficking without forcing mandates on families. That’s why I support tax credits for the purchase of gun safes, giving people a simple incentive to do the right thing.

Protecting constitutional rights and improving public safety are not opposing goals. With smart enforcement, strong due process, fair mental health policy, and support for responsible ownership, New Mexico can reduce violence while respecting the freedoms of law-abiding citizens.
