Healthcare
Access, Affordability, and Accountability for Every New Mexican
Healthcare is a vital issue for every family in New Mexico – in both urban and rural communities. Access to a doctor, an emergency room, or a specialist should not depend on your ZIP code. Yet too many New Mexicans face long wait times, limited provider options, rising costs, and in rural areas, the real risk of losing local hospitals and clinics altogether.
As Governor, Gregg Hull will focus on practical reforms that expand access, stabilize rural healthcare, reduce costs, and make New Mexico a state where healthcare professionals want to practice and build their careers.
Protecting and Strengthening Rural Healthcare
Rural communities are the backbone of New Mexico, but many are struggling to maintain hospitals, clinics, and emergency services. When a rural hospital closes, families are forced to travel hours for care, and communities lose both jobs and security.
Gregg will:
• Protect and foster rural healthcare systems to ensure communities can keep hospitals, clinics, and emergency services close to home
• Work with providers and local leaders to identify financial and regulatory barriers threatening rural facilities
• Support policies that stabilize rural hospitals and expand access to telehealth and specialty care
• No New Mexican should be left without nearby care simply because of where they live.
Reforming Medical Malpractice Laws
New Mexico’s medical malpractice environment has contributed to rising costs and has made it more difficult to recruit and retain healthcare providers. While patients must always be protected, the system must also be fair and sustainable.
Gregg will:
• Reform New Mexico’s medical malpractice laws to reduce unnecessary costs while preserving accountability
• Create a more predictable legal environment so doctors and specialists are not driven out of the state
• Encourage new providers to open practices in New Mexico by improving long-term stability
• A balanced system protects patients and ensures access to care.
Competitive Reimbursements and Financial Stability
Healthcare providers cannot operate effectively if reimbursement rates do not reflect the real cost of delivering care. When payments are too low, practices close and services disappear.
As Governor, Gregg will:
• Advocate for competitive reimbursement rates that allow providers to keep their doors open
• Work to modernize payment systems that reward quality and efficiency
• Ensure rural and community providers are not disadvantaged by outdated formulas
New Mexico must be competitive if it wants providers to stay and grow.
Lowering Prescription Drug Costs
Rising prescription drug prices continue to burden families, seniors, and small businesses. Too many people are forced to choose between medication and other basic needs.
Gregg will:
• Work to reduce prescription drug costs through transparency and competition
• Support policies that increase access to affordable generic and alternative options
• Promote accountability within the pharmaceutical supply chain
Lowering costs will help families manage chronic conditions without financial strain.
Expanding Medical Compacts
Interstate medical compacts make it easier for qualified healthcare professionals to practice across state lines, including through telemedicine. New Mexico should take full advantage of these tools to expand access.
Gregg will:
• Support adoption of additional medical and professional licensure compacts
• Streamline licensing processes to reduce delays for qualified providers
• Expand telehealth opportunities, particularly in underserved and rural areas
Modernizing licensing will increase access without sacrificing standards.
Recruiting and Retaining Healthcare Professionals
At the heart of New Mexico’s healthcare challenges is a workforce shortage. Doctors, nurses, specialists, and technicians are leaving or choosing other states. That must change.
Gregg will:
• Launch targeted programs to recruit healthcare professionals to New Mexico
• Strengthen retention incentives for providers who serve in rural and underserved communities
• Partner with universities and training programs to build a strong in-state healthcare workforce pipeline
New Mexico should be a destination for medical professionals, not a state they leave.
Healthcare reform in New Mexico requires leadership focused on results, not politics. Gregg Hull’s approach is straightforward: stabilize rural care, reform outdated laws, make the state competitive for providers, and lower costs for families.
Every New Mexican deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare – and as Governor, Gregg Hull will work to deliver it.
