Rio Rancho, NM — Recent attack ads are misrepresenting Gregg Hull’s record on Voter ID. The truth is clear: Gregg Hull has stood up for Voter ID, defended Rio Rancho’s voter-approved election safeguards, and opposed efforts that would weaken local control over city elections.
As Mayor of Rio Rancho, Gregg Hull sponsored and signed a City of Rio Rancho resolution opposing House Bill 174, legislation that would have transferred administration of Rio Rancho’s non-partisan local elections away from local officials and into a broader statewide system. The resolution warned that the bill conflicted with Rio Rancho’s Home Rule Charter, including provisions approved by voters requiring photo identification in city elections.
Gregg did not just quietly oppose the measure. As Chairman of the New Mexico Mayors Caucus, he helped lead opposition from mayors across the state. In a signed letter, Hull thanked mayors for helping secure changes to the bill that allowed municipalities to opt out and preserve “maximum local governance.” He also made clear that charter communities must have confidence that their voter-approved rules would be allowed to stand.
That record continued when Rio Rancho faced a proposal to move city elections into the statewide election system, which would have removed Rio Rancho’s local Voter ID protections. The Rio Rancho City Council defeated the proposal, preserving the city’s voter-approved safeguards and maintaining local control over municipal elections.
“Gregg Hull supports Voter ID. The record proves it,” said Jose Orozco. “As Mayor, Gregg stood up for Rio Rancho voters when their election protections were threatened. He opposed efforts to weaken local Voter ID safeguards, defended the city’s Home Rule Charter, and fought to keep election decisions in the hands of local voters.”
Hull believes Voter ID is a common-sense safeguard that strengthens confidence in elections, protects legally registered voters, and helps make clear that every eligible vote is counted fairly.
“New Mexicans deserve secure elections, clear rules, and confidence in the process,” said Jose Orozco. “Attack ads can say whatever they want, but Gregg Hull’s record is clear: he supports Voter ID, election integrity, and the right of communities to protect their elections.”
